Tuesday tunes is
the post of the week wherein I share some of my favorite songs, albums, and
artists. This fine Tuesday, for our first post, it seems only fitting that I
share a song by one of my absolute favorite bands: The Avett Brothers. The first
time I heard the brother's new album "The Carpenter" I didn't really
like it, I mean, its the Avett Brothers. If my junior year had been thrown into
a musical montage, they would have been the assigned soundtrack. Hands
down.
So of course, a new
album with a new sound, would definitely disappoint..
But, after listening to the album enough times
to memorize the lyrics of each song ( of course), I put it away for a few
months. Then a few weeks ago, I was painting and I found myself singing the
lyrics:
Wouldn't it be fine to stand
Behind the words we say
Behind the words we say
In the best of times
Oh, and you and I know all too well
About the hell and paradise
Right
here on earth
After
searching through my other albums and the internet, I found that somewhere
within my mind I had pulled up this unmistakably beautiful song. The Avett
Brothers could be and often are compared to Mumford and Sons, however the brothers' music
offers a more simple approach to folksy lyrics about life. (Don't I sound
fancy) But really, the sons are so complex and many people argue about the
meaning to their songs, whereas the meaning behind the brother's words offers
not idiotic club music simplicity, but a "we say what we mean and its kind of deep" simplicity. Many have said that the Avett Brothers are the poor man's Mumford, and honestly I couldn't agree with this more; I take it as a compliment. I mean, the poor man experiences life, whereas the rich man merely pays for it. And as Louis Armstrong said, " What we play is life," therefore I want my musician to KNOW life and it truly seems to me that the Avett Brothers understand the pains of life. They know merciful savior and know that community is the answer to many of "life's questions'.
This song is just so good. Besides all the somewhat cliche things I have just said...I just LOVE the Avett Brothers and this song. Allow the album to suprise you and the lyrics to sink in. You won't be sorry.
Thanks for reading and make your ears happy! (listen to the song yo.)
